Palmerston North
is on the banks of the Manawatu
River is one of the larger
New Zealand cities, with the
population of about 75.000.
It is a major commercial centre,
servicing a large, farming area,
with Massey University, an agricultural
college and a number of primary
industry research centres.
In 1864 the land of the town
was bought by the government
from the Maori owners and
the European settlement
began in 1866.
In the beginning it was isolated
and the Manawatu River was the
main access to Foxton and other
destinations.
A railway line to Foxton in the
1870's and to Wellington in
the 1880's was opened.
Palmerston North was named
after Lord Palmerston, British
Prime Minister and became a
borough in 1877 and
a city in 1930.
