Dunedin

is ranked the second largest city of the South Island, the sixth largest in New Zealand with a population of about 110 000.
Dunedin was the wealthiest, most influential and developed city in New Zealand during the late 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Dunedin's average temperature is around 11°C, ranging from a daily maximum of 19°C during summer and down to 2.5°C in winter with an average rainfall of 772  mm spread over the year.
Some snow falls in winter and experiences about 90 frost strikes a year on the low lying flat land.
The city is at the top of the long fjord like Otago Harbour.
Dunedin's deep-water port and container terminal is at Port Chalmers, about halfway up the harbour from the entrance.
The city has a major industrial centre, well known for its heavy and precision engineering.
Dunedin city was designed in 1846 by the New Zealand Company's chief surveyor, Charles Kettle, for the Free Church of Scotland settlers after breaking from the Church of Scotland in 1843.
The first settlers arrived in March and April 1848.
The town was to be called New Edinburgh but later changed to the old Celtic name of Edinburgh, Dun Edin.
After the discovery of gold in 1861 in Central Otago led to a rapid development of industry, agriculture and population in and around Dunedin.
The population quickly rose from 2000 to 10 000 by 1865.
For many years Dunedin was the New Zealand's chief manufacturing and commercial centre.
The first university and medical school was established in New Zealand, during the rapid development of the city.
Today's Dunedin has inherited many historic buildings and distinctive parks and reserves from this period of wealth.
