New South Wales, Australia

Australia facts & history in brief

Sydney is the capital of New South Wales, the oldest and largest city and chief port of Australia.
Population is over 3 million.
Was named after Thomas Townsend, Lord Sydney (1733-1800) who established a penal settlement in New South Wales.
A convict settlement, originally in Botany Bay, was located at Sydney Cove.
By 1820 the convict settlement had given way to a small Regency city.
Sydney and its beaches, like Bondi, attract large numbers of Holidaymakers and tourists.
Since World War II, there has been a considerable influx of new residents from Europe and Southeast Asia.
The city is a major cultural centre with three universities, theatres, opera house, museums, and art galleries.
It is also Australia's principal industrial centre with shipyards, oil refineries, automobile, electronics, chemical plants, and textiles.
It's chief landmarks are the Sydney Tower, the Harbour Bridge, and the distinctive and famous Opera House.

I've enjoyed my stay in Sydney very much.

I also enjoyed its railway system, part of it is under ground in and around downtown.
